PyeongChang 2018 gets the party started with countdown ceremony - Olympic News

PyeongChang 2018 gets the party started with countdown ceremony The build-up to PyeongChang 2018 began in earnest on 9 February with the Countdown Ceremony staged at Gangneung Hockey Arena.

Thousands of spectators turned out to witness a star-studded affair spearheaded by PyeongChang 2018 Ambassador Yuna Kim (an Olympic figure skating gold medallist) and Magnus Kim, the cross-country skier who won the Republic of Korea’s first gold medal in the sport at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

The crowds in the arena were then treated to a stunning programme of entertainment that showcased the host region’s rich cultural and sporting heritage. The evening kicked off with a group from the Gangwon Province Art Association who staged a dance performance combining Korean traditional and contemporary art. The energy levels then continued to rise with a taekwondo demonstration provided by soldiers from the First Republic of Korea Army, and an impressive flashmob by volunteers from the Gangwon Province Council for Culture.

The Olympic flag was raised before Korean Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn gave an address to all in attendance. This was followed by a speech delivered by the IOC’s Gunilla Lindberg, who is Chair of the Coordination Commission of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

“Today’s event is indeed a meaningful occasion where we can envisage the upcoming Olympic Winter Games, one of the world’s largest festivals celebrated by everyone around the world,” said Hwang Kyo-ahn. “Until the day the Olympic flame is carried to the host city of PyeongChang, let us all lend our hands in ensuring the success of the Games. I wish to ask you for even more support and interest in the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, which is just one year ahead of us.”

Lindberg added: “With only one year to go until the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, we can feel the excitement growing and the support of all of the Republic of Korea for these Games. World-class venues are being delivered on time and they will serve the development of winter sport in this region.

“Over 20 test events will be held this winter season, laying the groundwork for successful Olympic Winter Games in one year’s time. The athletes taking part in these events are already giving top marks to their experience in

PyeongChang. I am confident that come next February, the athletes, the people of Korea, and the watching world will have an outstanding Olympic Winter Games experience with PyeongChang 2018.”

Much to the delight of all in the stadium, the IOC President Thomas Bach then shared a message of good luck and best wishes to PyeongChang via a short video message.

President Bach said: “The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will open up new horizons. It will connect the people and the passion of the Republic of Korea with the world. PyeongChang will transform into a hub for Asian winter sports. For the first time, the magic of Olympic sport on snow and ice will come to Korea’. He carried on: ‘As an Olympian, I know of the excitement that every athlete feels just before the competition. So I wish the athletes all the very best as they prepare to make their Olympic dreams come true in PyeongChang next year’.

I wish the athletes all the very best as they prepare to make their Olympic dreams come true in PyeongChang next year. Thomas Bach IOC President

The evening reached a dramatic climax with the countdown ceremony marking one year to go until the start of the Games. A fire performance and lights symbolising the flame of the Olympic Torch followed with the torch being officially unveiled along with the torch bearer uniforms.

Wrapping up the One-Year-to-Go Countdown Ceremony, POCOG President Lee Hee-beom said: “What a fantastic celebration we had here tonight to mark one year to go. Thank you to all the performers who made tonight so special. The atmosphere was wonderful and this is a great way to show the world that we are ready to put on a great show in 12 months’ time.”

SmackDown Countdown 2006: Finlay

SmackDown Countdown 2006: Finlay

For six consecutive years IGN and THQ have teamed up to bring our readers an ongoing exclusive look at the superstars of the WWE, and this season is no exception. Famous the world over, our "SmackDown Countdown" chronicles each wrestler, diva, and legend that will appear in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007, and comes complete with never-before-seen screenshots and direct-feed movies of every last one of them. Every day for the next nine weeks, we'll profile more than 60 different personalities (including two each on Mondays and Fridays as a special homage to Raw and SmackDown fans), and for the first time ever, will cover two different platforms with images and video from both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions. Hot stuff? You bet.

But enough with the formalities it's time to throw down with today's Countdown superstar, Bobby Lashley!

Finlay has made his mission clear: he's here to fight. That's exactly what he's going to do, and he's always been good at it. Hailing from the mean streets of Belfast, Ireland, Finlay will tell you that he loves to fight, and this double-tough individual can back up his bravado.

Throughout his career, Finlay has been regarded as one of the toughest men to ever step foot inside the ring. Originally plying his trade in Europe, Finlay held 16 major championships in Great Britain and Germany before coming to the United States in the mid-1990s. Landing in WCW, Finlay immediately began an intense rivalry with fellow European William Regal. Finlay went on to win the WCW Television Championship from Booker T in 1998, but made his true mark in WCW's Hardcore division. However, shortly after winning the first ever Hardcore Junkyard Invitational in 1999, Finlay suffered a severe leg injury at a WCW live event when he was sent crashing through a table. After a short stay in WCW following his return, Finlay returned to his native Great Britain to wrestle in 2001.

After five years away from American rings, Finlay came to SmackDown in January 2006 looking to fight. Less than a month after his return, Finlay became involved in a heated rivalry with Bobby Lashley. The war began at No Way Out, when Finlay hit Lashley with his shillelagh, costing Lashley his match with JBL and ending his undefeated streak. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long ordered a rematch on March 10, with the winner qualifying for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 22. However, that match never got started, as both men brawled out into the parking lot, with Lashley nearly overturning a car onto Finlay. Finally, the two met in a Lumberjack Match; thanks to his shillelagh, Finlay won the match and qualified for WrestleMania.

Finlay next took part in the King of the Ring tournament on SmackDown and Irish eyes were certainly smiling upon Finlay last July when he earned the United States Championship. With the help of his miniature associate, Little Bastard, and not one, but two shillelaghs, Finlay unseated his heated rival Bobby Lashley to do it. The Irish United States Champion left The Great American Bash with his championship still around his waist. With Lashley rendered unable to compete by Teddy Long, Finlay faced fellow royal Court member, William Regal. Regal came up short as Finlay got some assistance from Little Bastard and Regal's right boot, however, Finlay was honored in SmackDown's first-ever knighthood ceremony, called by King Booker. The royal knighting was spoiled by an intense Bobby Lashley who came to the ring to battle the King's court.

That's the SmackDown Countdown for today folks. Just remember that all statistical attributes are considered temporary until the final version of the game ships in November, so if you end up with the game and things don't quite match up you should understand why. We'll see you again next time with another superstar.
